Students with Disabilities PDF Print E-mail

Lupton Library provides reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. As with all Library services, UTC students, faculty and staff will be given first priority. Every effort will be made to accommodate requests such as book retrieval or photocopying, but staffing levels and other pending user requests may cause short delays.

 

Students with Visual Impairments:

The Library is equipped with assistive technology and software for use by students with visual impairments. An accessible PC workstation and Optelec magnifier are available on the 1st floor, behind the Reference Desk.

Optelec (CCTV): The Optelec unit magnifies the text of printed materials.

JAWS: JAWS is a software speech synthesizer that will read text aloud on the computer screen. JAWS is available on the Library's accessible PC workstation.

Kurzweil 1000 & 3000: Kurzweil 1000 & 3000 are speech synthesizers that read electronic files and documents from the computer screen. Kurzweil 1000 & 3000 are available on the Library's accessible PC workstation.

Text Help Read and Write Gold: Text Help Read and Write Gold is a 'floating' tool bar with features such as speech feedback, phonetic spell checking, word prediction & homophone support.  Text Help Read and Write Gold is available on the Library's accessible PC workstation.

ZoomText: ZoomText is a computer screen magnifier program, which enlarges the text of web pages and Windows applications. ZoomText is available on the Library's accessible PC workstation.

Hardware and accessories: A flatbed scanner is available at the Library's accessible PC workstation. Headphones may be checked out at the Circulation Desk (located on the 1st floor.)

The Library's accessible PC workstation is equipped with a height-adjustable table.

Elevators within the Library provide access to all public areas and are labeled for use by students with visual impairments.

Students with hearing or speech impairments may communicate with staff at the Tennessee Relay Service Center using a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD). Staff at the Tennessee Relay Service Center will relay messages to the Reference Department. Replies will be relayed by the Tennessee Relay Service Center back to the original caller using a TDD device.

 

Students with Physical Impairments:

An elevator is available from the parking garage below the Library to the covered portico outside the Library's main entrance. Entrance ramps from the upper level parking deck and from the sidewalk on the west side of the Library are also available.

Doors to the Library can be opened electronically when activated by a student. Elevators within the Library provide access to all public areas and are labeled for use by students with visual impairments.

Restrooms on the 2nd floor are wheelchair accessible and can be reached using the elevators.

  • Retrieving Materials

Students who need assistance retrieving books and other materials should contact Library employees at the nearest Service Desk. For assistance with materials located in the Circulating Collection (located on the 3rd floor), please visit the Circulation Desk (located on the 1st floor.)

  • Photocopying Materials

Students who need assistance photocopying library materials should contact Library employees at the nearest Service Desk.
